Marine Dead, Driver Hurt In Car-Train Crash

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) ― A driver who tried to beat an Amtrak train to the crossing -- and lost -- is hospitalized on Tuesday with a serious head injury and his passenger is dead.

Authorities said the 1999 Chevy Blazer was crossing the tracks around 9 p.m. Monday in Oceanside when it was hit by Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner as it headed to Los Angeles.

The SUV was pushed about 300 feet. A Marine in the car died.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said the car may have had its lights off.

None of the 70 passengers on the train was hurt, but the train was delayed about four hours.

Two other trains were delayed for shorter periods, but service is back to normal on Tuesday.
