Easter Bunny Hops Over To Families On Skid Row
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
Hundreds of skid row families lined up Saturday when a gritty section of the city's Skid Row was transformed into a grassy temporary park for the Fred Jordan Mission's first-ever Easter Egg roll.
A carnival with a live petting zoo, face painting, rock climbing wall and other attractions was set up on a street normally home to dozens of people sleeping on tents and cardboard, organizers said.
Hundreds of volunteers were lining the area with balloons and streamers, and preparing a buffet lunch in front of the Fred Jordan Mission, a center that for decades has labored to feed, house and rehabilitate persons who for various reasons have found themselves living on the streets of Los Angeles.
Mission officials said the regular assortment of homeless people has been augmented with families and numerous children this year, as the California unemployment rate has topped 10 percent and foreclosures force renters and homeowners out of their residences.
