Neither coronary bypass nor nitroglycerine pills eased a heart patients pain. But experimental injections of stem cells directly into his heart brought his dramatic relief.

Doctors at a Los Angeles-based hospital have injected a heart patient with specialized stem cells grown from his own heart tissue in an attempt to reverse scarring after a heart attack.
The experimental procedure was announced Tuesday but took place on June 26 at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.
Doctors hope that the stem cells will grow healthy muscle in the area of the heart most damaged by the heart attack.
Twenty-four patients are participating in an initial study, with some receiving the cardiac stem cells and some serving as controls.
The first patient injected with stem cells grown from his own heart was a 39-year-old construction company controller from the San Fernando Valley.
