It looks like chaos, but that's what dodgeball is all about. Add in a lot of fun and more than a dozen players and you've got a pickup game of dodgeball at the 12th Street Gym in Philadelphia. Both men and women play and there are no holds barred.
Lenny Malcolm dropped in for a quick game.
"It stings a little bit but when you're having so much fun the sting goes away very fast," he said.
This gym class flashback is a calorie killer, CBS station KYW-TV in Philadelphia reported.
"When you're a kid you don't think about the workout that you're getting when you play a game," said 12th Street Gym fitness trainer Meghan Waldeck.
Dodgeball started at the 12th Street Gym about a year and a half ago.
"You're stopping, you're starting, you're running fast, you're throwing as hard as you can," Waldeck said.
Dodgeball sessions run for a full hour. Each game usually lasts about 7 or 8 minutes.
"Punk Rope" is the name of the game in another workout room of the gym. It's a tough name for a tough workout.
"It's called Punk Rope because we set the class to punk music," said Joann Fegley, a fitness trainer. "It's quick paced."
The class lasts an hour and there are fifteen minute intervals with one to 3 minutes of steady rope jumping combined with line dancing and a game of tag.
"If you can jump rope for a minute, at a pretty steady pace, it's like running a mile in 8 minutes," Fegley said.
These playground workouts are free for 12th Street Gym members.
