Residents are urged to turn in lead-contaminated, soft lunchboxes that were made in China and given away as part of a promotion by the state Department of Public Health.
The state is recalling approximately 300,000 of the green and blue soft-sided lunchboxes that have slogans like "Eat Fruits & Vegetables" and "Be Active" stenciled on the fabric.
The vinyl lining of the lunchboxes contains lead, according to tests done by state officials.
If the lining is ingested, the lead can cause brain damage.
The recall targets about 56,000 dark-green lunchboxes with slogans in English and Spanish.
This is the latest lead-related recall involving China-made goods. El Segundo-based Mattel, the world's biggest toymaker, recently recalled millions of products containing lead paint.
