11 Hidden Allergy Hot Spots In Your Home....Achoo!

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― If you suffer from seasonal allergies, no one has to tell you...wait...wait...achoo! ....sorry, how bad allergies are right now.

Hay fever, grass, pollen, dander...and those are mostly outdoors. When you come home, there are a whole different group of dusty, snarly things to get your, well, your dander up!

Dust mites, dust, and all those outside influences can find their way inside when you have the window open.

Prevention Magazine has outlined "11 Hidden Allergy Hot Spots In Your Home" and how to combat them in their current issue.

Here are some tips to help keep allergens to a minimum.

  • Wash clothes after being outside, take shower or bath to get rid of pollen on skin and hair
  • Run throws and couch pillows through a hot dryer for 10-15 minutes (if it won't damage items) once a week to kill dust mites
  • Vacuum with a HEPA filter, don't forget furniture
  • Wash bedding at least once a week
  • Buy new pillows once a year or cover them in allergy-proof cases
  • Cover your mattress with an allergy-proof mattress cover
  • Don't leave wet bathmats on the floor, hang them to dry
  • Use air cleaners with HEPA filters
  • Wipe down shelves and bookcases frequently
  • Limit stuffed animals on kids' beds
  • Toss stuff animals into freezer during the day to kill dust mites (remember not to cook them)
  • Hardwood floors are better than carpets for allergy sufferers
