Do you really want to know what is inside these doughnuts?
State senators are worried that Americans are eating out more than they used to -- usually without knowing just how many calories or how much fat or salt they are consuming in one sitting.
They are sending the Assembly a bill requiring chain restaurants to post the calories in meals on menu boards. Fat and sodium would have to be listed in printed menus to help consumers make more intelligent choices.
A recent poll found that two-thirds of Californians could not correctly pick between menu items based on their calorie, salt or fat content.
The Senate bill applies only to chains of 10 or more restaurants. It does not apply to daily specials, or to extras such
as cheese or guacamole requested by diners.
The restaurant industry says nutrition information already is available for diners who want it.
