FDA Approves Asthma Inhaler For Younger Children

PITTSBURGH (CBS) ― The FDA has approved the use of an inhaler to treat asthma in younger children.

Asmanex, an inhaled steroid, has been available for two years as a daily treatment for adults and children older than 12, but now kids as young as four will be able to have it as a treatment option.

A study of almost 300 children compared Asmanex with placebo. The group getting the actual drug had fewer asthma symptoms, emergency room visits and missed days of school.

Stunted growth, infections and cataracts are possible problems with this class of drugs.

Insurance coverage varies, so check it out with your plan. Also, talk you your doctor about your options since Asmanex is just one of several choices of inhaled steroids.
