The industry's heavyweights came out to celebrate the year's biggest night for music at the 2009 Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Strutting the red carpet, stars showcased the latest in fashion do's and don'ts.
Many of the starlets avoided the overstated, draped in flowing, feminine gowns rife with ruffles. Socialite and TV personality Kim Kardashian was striking in a lavender strapless dress with avant-garde frills. Bi-curious pop star Katy Perry, true to her retro tendencies, wore a strapless, pale pink gown and soft curls that were a throwback to 1940s glamour.
The men stuck to crisp suits and many donned hats. Jason Mraz wore his "lucky" striped hat, Jack Black sported a black fedora, and Will.i.am and T-Pain seemed to be competing for wackiest top hat.
Canadian DJ "Deadmau5", (pronounced "dead mouse"), garnered plenty of attention for his odd rhinestone-encrusted "mouse" helmet. Another guy was walking around in a white, full-body bunny costume. Was this a media stunt or are these guys looking for an alternative to celebrity-decried fur?
But who could believe M.I.A.'s polka-dotted, sheer number, that was made all the more jaw-dropping with her later-stage pregnancy?
The red carpet had its share of fashion victims and its share of traffic victims.
One reporter stepped into the middle of the carpet as Will.i.am and his entourage were rushing past the media. They plowed right on through the slight TV broadcaster and she managed to escape, rather shaken.
I shudder to think how close she came at becoming red carpet roadkill.
