Sex Offenders Live In Foster Homes, Motels

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― We do not have sex offenders here.
None?
No!

For years we exposed them.

(Sound on tape) "Most people would think the housing of sex offenders is kinda of sleazy."

People refused to talk about it.

"You can ask me a thousand questions," said one man angrily, "and I don't have to tell you s--t."

But now the state has confirmed it.

In a scathing 78-page report, the California state auditor found sex offenders illegally placed throughout the state, including family daycare homes.

"The state is trying to shut you down because your son had sex with one of the children, isn't that correct?"

In 2005 we reported on a case where a daycare center owner's son allegedly had sex with a foster child. Now the state has gone further -- finding 49 sex offenders who were registered at the same address as daycare centers...including the daycare center run out of this home in Pacoima.

The Department of Social Services is trying to revoke the license.

The auditor also questioned the placement of sex offenders in motels.

Nat Sound: Did you know there are sex offenders in the hotel?

We uncovered them there, too. Including some just across the street from Disneyland. The auditor's report demands change and Assemblyman Todd Spitzer says the time has come.

"We've known this for a long time," says Spitzer, "Channel 2 exposed it. The sex offender management board investigated it. Now the auditor finds sex offenders living in daycare centers. Citizens should be outraged and ask who's in charge in Sacramento?"

This is David Goldstein reporting for CBS 2.
