Solar-Powered Trash Cans Hit Pasadena Streets

There's nothing cheap about the new trash cans on the streets of Pasadena. The city recently installed the $3,500 bins featuring solar panels on top and a compactor inside. Whenever garbage is tossed in, the compactors automatically crush the material, allowing the so-called "Big Belly" bins to hold up to 200 gallons of waste.

L.A. Landmarks To Turn Off Lights For 'Earth Hour'

Hundreds of Los Angeles landmarks are joining WWF's "Earth Hour," an event that hopes to shed light on the importance of energy conservation by turning out the lights. Participants cast a vote for earth by turning their light switches off and cast a vote for global warming by keeping their lights on.

Earth Gets A Hug When This Hybrid Tugs

The world's first hybrid-electric tugboat has arrived at the Port of Long Beach. The 78-foot vessel was unveiled Friday by its makers, Foss Maritime Co. The company says its green-and-white, diesel-electric tug, named the Carolyn Dorothy, can perform the same as a traditional tug, but with 44 percent less pollution.

'Green' Light Bulb Saves SoCal $27M

More than 100,000 Southern California Edison customers have installed more than 1 million energy-efficient light bulbs since October as part of an effort to combat climate change, the utility announced today. Using Energy Star Compact Fluorescent Lamp bulbs has saved customers $27 million on their utility bills while cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 420 million pounds, according to the utility.

On a tree-lined corner of Studio City filled with modest homes, flower gardens and neighbors who chat across back fences, two wiry celebrities are engaged in a green grudge match. The good-natured competition between actor Ed Begley Jr. and Bill Nye, the host of the educational series "Bill Nye, the Science Guy" began when Nye moved into the neighborhood two years ago. Since then the two moderately famous and slightly geeky environmentalists have matched wits over whose home can leave a smaller carbon footprint.
