Fire Up The Hummer! Gas Prices Drop Again

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Los Angeles County gasoline prices dropped sharply for the third consecutive week this week, having fallen by a total of nearly 25 cents per gallon since the downward trend began, the Automobile Club of Southern California reported Friday.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded fell 9.1 cents this week to $3.084 per gallon, 21 cents less than last month, but 61 cents more than this time last year.

The average price also dropped 9.1 cents from Jan. 18-25, and 6.7 cents from Jan. 11-18.

The Orange County average has fallen even more -- 10 cents this week and 29 cents over the past three weeks. The average is $3.001, 26.6 cents less than a month ago, but still 56.7 cents more than this time last year.

The Orange County average fell 9.5 cents from both Jan. 11-18 and Jan 18-25.

"With gas prices starting out at such high levels at the start of the year, it's not surprising that we've seen a rapid drop," Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring said. "But we're still a long way from $2.47 a gallon, which was the average price at this time last year."
