Fill 'Er Up! Gas Prices Drop Again

Southland gasoline prices dropped sharply for the second consecutive week this week, thanks to an unexpected surplus in the state's refineries, the Automobile Club of Southern California reported Friday.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded fell 9.1 cents in Los Angeles County to $3.175 and 9.5 cents in Orange County to $3.101.

The Los Angeles County average is 5 cents less than last month's, but still 66 cents more than at this time last year. The Orange County average is 7.2 cents less than last month's and 64.7 cents more than at this time last year.

The average price dropped 6.7 cents in Los Angeles County from Jan. 11- 18 and 9.5 cents in Orange County.

"More and more gas stations are displaying prices under $3 a gallon as this decline continues," Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring said. "California now has the fifth most expensive gasoline in the country, instead of its usual position of having the second most expensive gasoline.

Analysts say this is because California refineries have an unexpected surplus of supply and prices are falling even faster than in other states as a result."
