Fire In Santa Cruz Mountains Prompts Evacuations

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (AP) ― California officials say a wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains has prompted mandatory evacuations of about 60 homes.

Fire officials say the blaze that started at around 3 a.m. Sunday had burned about 600 acres by early afternoon. The cause has not yet been determined.

CalFire spokeswoman Cherie Alver says a trailer and two outbuildings have been destroyed and another 150 homes and 100 businesses are threatened.

The blaze is burning near an area where a wildfire last year destroyed 29 homes and threatened the Mount Madonna retreat center.

More than 200 firefighters were on the scene. The sheriff's department is contacting residents subject to the mandatory evacuation order and has closed several roads to outside traffic.
