SoCal Forests Halt Road Repairs To Fight Fires

SAN BERNARDINO (AP) ― National forest managers are halting road repair and campground projects in Southern California and elsewhere because of the soaring cost of fighting wildfires.

The San Bernardino and Cleveland national forests are slashing nearly $6 million in nonessential spending.

San Bernardino National Forest spokeswoman Valerie Baca says orders from the national office are clear -- "bring all spending to a halt."

The San Bernardino forest is cutting $4.5 million, most of it for roadwork and tree-clearing. The Cleveland forest is eliminating $1.35 million in campground upgrades.
