Brush Fire Ignites South Of Banning
Officials Say Fire Could Spread To Several Hundred Acres
BANNING, Calif. (CBS) ―
A brush fire quickly scorched 20 acres in an area south of Banning Saturday and fire officials said it has the potential to grow to several hundred acres.
The fire was reported near Old Banning-Idyllwild Road and San Gorgonio Avenue at 12:15 p.m. and spread to 20 acres within an hour, Cal Fire-Riverside County spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.
No structures were considered threatened and no evacuations were ordered, Hagemann said.
Four air tankers and one helicopter were assisting more than 90 firefighters on the ground near the juncture of the I-10 Freeway and Highway 243, Hagemann said.
No road closures had been ordered in the area, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said at 1:40 p.m.
Hagemann said the fire has the potential to grow to "several hundred" acres.
