Ten people involved with a fall campfire will not be charged with igniting a wildfire that burned more than 200 homes in Santa Barbara and neighboring Montecito.
District Attorney Christie Stanley says in a statement Friday that the investigation could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the campfire started what became known as the Tea Fire.
Investigators found evidence there was a campfire at a Montecito landmark called the Tea Garden between midnight and 4 a.m. on Nov. 13. The wildfire began at 5:45 p.m. During the 14-hour gap, numerous citizens saw people and vehicles in the vicinity that they believed were responsible for the wildfire.
The district attorney says the people who participated in the campfire will only be charged with misdemeanor trespassing and unlawfully building and using a campfire without permission.
