Malibu residents who lost homes or suffered at least $10,000 damage in the Corral Fire will have a chance to lower their annual property taxes by having their homes reassessed, it was reported Sunday.
The first installment of county property taxes normally falls due Dec. 10, and affected homeowners can ask to have the payments deferred, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Los Angeles County Assessor Rick Auerbach said his office would try to complete the reassessments within about three weeks.
"We're going to know all the properties that are damaged. And as soon as it's safe, my staff will go out and take a look," he told the newspaper.
Anyone whose property is reassessed will automatically get a 30-60 extension without having to apply.
Unincorporated county residents can call the Assessor's office at (213) 974-3211; Malibu residents should call (310) 665-5413.
