An aggressive aerial assault successfully beat back the Station Fire from several La Cañada Flintridge homes, including the home of CBS 2 / KCAL 9 helicopter reporter Larry Welk.
Roaring flames edged close to the fence that separated Welk's backyard from the brush surrounding his home Saturday.
Welk was among his neighbors that stayed, despite the mandatory evacuation orders. Several of his neighbors were spotted wielding garden hoses, trying to wet as much of their homes and the surrounding brush as possible.
"Of course I'm nervous, look at my backyard," Welk said. "It's completely covered in red, because they had to put a Phos-Chek bomber on the yard."
That Phos-Chek drop covered his pool and several pieces of his patio furniture with fire retardant and just barely missed Welk as he took pictures of the drop.
