'Pulp Fiction' Writer Arrested For Manslaughter
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
An Oscar-winning screenwriter ("Pulp
Fiction," 1994) was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and DUI in connection with a vehicle crash in Ventura County.
Roger Avary, 42, was free Sunday evening on $50,000 bail.
Avary and Quentin Tarantino shared the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award for co-writing "Pulp Fiction." Avary was the driver in a solo-vehicle crash in Ojai in which his wife was injured and another man was killed, according to the Ventura County Star.
The crash reportedly occurred shortly after midnight Sunday in front of the Ojai Lumber Company.
Andreas Zini, 34, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting the Avarys, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he died on the operating table just before 7 a.m., a coroner's reported.
Gretchen Avary, 40, was ejected from the vehicle and found on the roadway by deputies. She was transported to Ojai Valley Community Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Avary was born in Canada but grew up in Torrance and Manhattan Beach, and got into movie-making after he started clerking at one of the first video stores in Southern California, Video Out-Takes, in Redondo Beach. He met Tarantino while working at another video store, Video Archives.
