Latino Heritage Month Kicks Off At City Hall

LOS ANGELES Boxer Oscar de la Hoya, "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria and activist Dionisio Morales were recognized by Los Angeles city leaders today at a festive City Hall ceremony to kick off Latino Heritage Month.

"We should revel in the fact that we are one of the most diverse cities, not just in the United States but maybe in the world," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "We come from 140 different countries, we speak some 224
languages. We can travel the world, go to every corner on every continent
anywhere in the world and never leave Los Angeles."

Villaraigosa presented the "Dream of Los Angeles" award to de la Hoya
and the "Spirit of Los Angeles" award to Morales. "From the very beginning, our city, Los Angeles, has been a city defined by hope, by dreams and by determined spirits," de la Hoya said. "Every victory in or out of the ring I have achieved has the force of my family and my community behind it," he said. "With modesty and pride, I accept this recognition and encourage all of us, especially our children, to learn about the strength of our rich heritage."

Longoria, who did not attend the City Hall ceremony, is the recipient of
the "Hope of Los Angeles" award.

The city of Los Angeles and Disney are sponsoring essay and poster
contests for youths as part of Latino Heritage Month. Children in grades six through 12 are eligible to participate in the creative writing contest.
Submissions are due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 17. The winners will receive Dell laptop computers.

All children, between ages 5 and 18, may participate in the poster contest. Art work is due today at 5 p.m. The winners in each age division with receive a U.S. savings bond valued between $150 and $300.
