Late Wednesday night, shielded by heavy security, Michelle Williams and daughter Matilda were rushed into their Brooklyn N.Y. home on the corner of Hoyt and Dean Streets.
Williams shared the 4-story home with Heath Ledger and their 2-year-old daughter before the couple split up last September. The 27-year-old actress was filming a movie in Sweden when she received the devastating news of Ledger's death.
"The medical examiner said today there was no criminality, but of course we have to wait for the toxicology reports," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
The medical examiner said preliminary autopsy results were inconclusive and it could take up to 10 days to determine what killed the 28-year-old actor.
Police say six different types of prescription drugs were found in Ledger's fourth floor SoHo apartment, including anti-anxiety medications and sleeping pills.
A rolled-up $20 bill was also found near the Australian actor's bed, but police said it had no traces of drug residue.
"The issue of illegal drugs. No illegal drugs, all in bottles, prescription bottles," Kelly said.
Investigators say Ledger was still alive around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when his housekeeper saw him sleeping and snoring in his bedroom. It was almost two hours later when masseuse Diana Wolozin entered the bedroom and tried to wake Ledger, but his body was cold.
Authorities say before calling 911, Wolozin called actress Mary Kate Olsen, whose number was programmed in Ledger's cell phone. Olsen, who was in Los Angeles, sent her private security to the apartment.
On Wednesday night Debbie Fontana, drove her distraught daughter Melanie from Long Island to Ledger's Manhattan apartment and Michelle Williams' Brooklyn home to leave flowers and pay their respect to Melanie's favorite actor.
"She's just devastated," Debbie Fontana said. "She's been a fan of his since day one."
