Actor Michael Landon, who was widely known for his roles in
Little House on the Prairie,
Bonanza and
Little Joe Cartwright, died in 1991 at the age of 54 of pancreatic cancer.
Landon, who was also a director and producer, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 1991.
Nearly 18 years later, his widow Cindy, daughter Jennifer and son, Sean have joined forces with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) to raise funds for research.
The Landons' also met with members of Congress recently, along with hundreds of advocates, to help get the
Pancreatic Research and Education Act passed. They asked lawmakers to increase the National Cancer Institute's budget so more money can be dedicated to pancreatic cancer research.
Today, pancreatic cancer, which is also called "the silent killer," is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It is also the most deadly, with a five-year survival rate of five-percent. Currently, there are no early detection tools and no cure.
The PANCAN works to raise money for research and provides patient support, community outreach advocacy for a cure.
