Scientific, Technical Academy Awards Winners Named

Scientific and Technical Academy Awards winners were announced on Friday.

The developers of film-production devices such as miniature fog machines, portable camera dollies and fluid effects system were named on Friday as winners of Scientific and Technical Academy Awards.
Winners were chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which will present the awards Feb. 9. The scientific achievements being honored did not have to be developed in the past year to be eligible for consideration.
According to the Academy, the achievements "must demonstrate a proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures."
In addition to the award winners, special honors will be presented to three people:
-- David Grafton will receive the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for his technological work that has "brought credit to the industry";
-- David S. Inglish will receive the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation for "his outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences"; and
-- Jonathan Erland will receive an Award of Commendation for his work "identifying and solving the problem of high-speed emulsion stress syndrome in motion picture film stock."
Winners of the Scientific and Technical Awards are:
Technical Achievement Awards (Academy Certificate)
-- Christien Tinsley, for the creation of transfer techniques for creating and applying 2D and 3D makeup;
-- Jorg Pohler and Rudiger Kleinke, for the design and development of battery-operated fog machines known as "Tiny Foggers";
-- Sebastien Cramer, for the design of the Skater Dolly and its related products;
-- Victor Gonzalez, Ignacio Vargas and Angel Tena, for the creation of the RealFlow software application;
-- Jonathan Cohen, Jerry Tessendorf, Jeroen Molemaker and Michael Kowalski, for the development of the system of fluid dynamics tools at Rhythm & Hues;
-- Duncan Brinsmead, Jos Stam, Julia Pakalns and Martin Werner, for the design and implementation of the Maya Fluid Effects system;
-- Stephan Trojansky, Thomas Ganshorn and Oliver Pilarski, for the development of the Flowline fluid effects system.
Scientific and Engineering Awards (Academy Plaque)
-- Doug Roble, Nafees Bin Zafar and Ryo Sakaguchi, for the development of the fluid simulation system at Digital Domain;
-- Nick Rasmussen, Ron Fedkiw and Frank Losasso Petterson, for the development of the Industrial Light & Magic fluid simulation system.
Academy Award of Merit (Oscar Statuette)
-- Eastman Kodak Co., for the development of photographic emulsion technologies incorporated into the Kodak Vision2 family of color negative films
