People Find Relief From The Heat At The Beach

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― They say the beach is Mother Nature's air conditioning… that could explain why so many flocked to the beach Monday for relief from the scorching temperatures.

At Big Corona State Beach in Newport, it was twenty to thirty degrees cooler than communities like Riverside and Tustin – a huge relief for sweaty Southern Californians.

Friends and families have set up camp on the sand and brought coolers of ice, cold drinks. They are building sand castles and playing games. But most of all, beachgoers are here to stay cool – swimming in the ocean or just starring at the water.

For more information on how people are staying cool or for tips for preventing heat-related illnesses, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC also offers a Extreme Heat Prevention Guide.
