Officials issued an excessive heat warning for Los Angeles County mountains and inland areas until 8 p.m. Monday as the Southland head wave continued.
The warnings mean a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur and heat-related illnesses are likely.
"Very hot conditions will persist over the area everywhere except for the immediate coast," according to a Weather Service statement. "The heat will pose hazards for anyone outdoors as well as people without air conditioning away from the coast."
There was also a slight chance of a thunderstorm over the mountains and the deserts Monday afternoon and evening.
Forecasters expect the high-pressure system producing the excessive heat to weaken overnight and Tuesday, leaving slightly cooler temperatures that will not require warnings.
The Weather Services urged people to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and not to leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
