SoCal Officers Partake In 'Battle of the Badges'
LOS ANGELES
More than 50 Southland law enforcement agencies began their third annual "Battle of the Badges" blood drive today.
The competition, which continues through Feb. 2, is coordinated by the U.S. Probation Office through the American Red Cross, said Nick Samienego of the Red Cross.
"We encourage all badge-carrying officers, their friends and family, to become heroes by helping save lives through blood donations," Samaniego said in a statement.
"The Battle of the Badges goal for 2009 is to recruit more than 2,500 donors, substantially impacting the availability of blood for accident victims, cancer patients, premature babies, burn patients, or our friends and neighbors who may need regular blood transfusions in order to live," Samienego said.
Among the participating agencies are the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the U.S. District Court, the California Highway Patrol, the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
