City Of Malibu Bans Plastic Bags
City Council Unanimously Approves Reyes' Motion To Ban Plastic Bags In L.A. By 2010
MALIBU (CBS) ―
Phase II of the city of Malibu's ban on plastic bags goes into effect on June 27, 2009. All retail and business establishments must now comply with the ordinance intended to reduce litter and pollution in creeks and the ocean.
On May 27, 2008, the City Council collectively adopted an ordinance banning the point-of-sale distribution of both non-compostable and compostable plastic shopping bags.
City Council unanimously approved Councilmember Ed P. Reyes' motion, by a 13-0 vote, to ban plastic bags in the city of L.A. by July 1, 2010, if the State has not imposed a fee of at least 25 cents by then, and also polystyrene food containers in city facilities by July 1, 2009
Fewer than 5% of plastic bags are ever recycled. The discarded bags frequently end up in creeks and the ocean where they can be deadly to marine wildlife that mistake them for food or become entangled in the trash.
L.A. and Malibu will be joing the list of cities who have already adopted a plastic bag ban. These cities include Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach.
