Ralphs Stores Recall Beef Over E. Coli Scare

LOS ANGELES Area Ralphs supermarkets in Hollywood, Silver Lake and Orange County have taken ground beef off their shelves in response to a Nebraska-based recall that linked beef to an outbreak of E. coli illnesses, it was reported Wednesday.

Omaha-based Nebraska Beef Ltd. recalled 531,707 pounds of ground beef that was produced since May after some of the food, sold by Kroger Co., was linked to reports that approximately 38 people in Ohio and Michigan become ill after eating the tainted meat, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Kroger immediately recalled its beef products from those states, where a U.S. probe into the illnesses is continuing.

Ralphs supermarkets, which are supplied by Kroger, have posted signs that ground beef would not be available until Tuesday, a Hollywood store manager told The Times.

At the time, a spokesperson from Ralphs could not be reached to comment on how many local stores had removed the ground beef, according to The Times.

E. coli can cause severe illness and even death. Symptoms of E. coli infection can include stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Federal agriculture officials are urging people to eat only ground beef that had been cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Farenheit.
