Wild Spark-Filled Pursuit Ends In Van Nuys

VAN NUYS, Calif. Two men were arrested late Tuesday following a police chase that began in North Hollywood and ended some 30 minutes later in Van Nuys, near the driver's residence.

The chase began near Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Albers Street around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Four people were in the SUV that police attempted to stop for a possible
DUI investigation. The driver refused to yield, triggering a chase, said Sgt. Paul McLaughlin of the LAPD's Mission Station, where the specialized unit involved in the arrest is based.

During the chase, at least two guns were thrown out of the windows of the SUV, only one of which officers collected. Two passengers also jumped out of the SUV during the pursuit and fled on foot, McLaughlin said.

The chase continued on surface streets into Van Nuys, where police laid out a spike strip, which shredded the SUV's tires. The driver continued
driving erratically on the vehicle's rims.

The pursuit finally came to end around 11:30 p.m. on Saticoy and Densmore streets -- near the driver's home -- and the driver and his passenger, described only as males, were taken into custody, he said.

Police recovered one of two guns that were thrown out of the SUV during the chase, McLaughlin said.
