Police said a driver killed a pedestrian as he fled from California Highway Patrol officers on a Los Angeles street.
Police spokeswoman Norma Eisenman said 26-year-old Hector Vidal also traded gunfire with officers and is being held without bail Sunday.
Eisenman said the chase began late Saturday when CHP officers tried to pull over Vidal's 2002 Cadillac for a vehicle violation on U.S. 101. She said he sped off, exited and allegedly hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk, who died at the scene on Ventura Boulevard. The pedestrian has not been identified.
Eisenman said Vidal fled and then traded gunfire with officers, but no one was injured. He stopped after rear-ending a sport utility vehicle and refused to get out. After a short standoff a SWAT team took him into custody.
Police did not know whether Vidal had hired an attorney.
They asked anyone with information to call the LAPD at (877) 527-3247.
