Driver Ends Police Chase When He Plows Into Tree

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A suspect in a shooting who led police on a car chase through South Los Angeles crashed into a tree Sunday, injuring himself and a passenger, a sergeant said.

Shots rang out in the 2800 block of Wellington Road in Jefferson Park about 12:25 a.m., but no one was hit, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Paul Lawson of the Southwest Station.

The two male suspects, whose names were withheld, left the scene, but returned about 15 minutes later and were seen by the victim and police, Lawson said.

Police chased the suspects' Honda CRV from the scene. The chase led toward downtown on the freeway, then surface streets, ending with the suspects crashing into a tree at Broadway and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about 12:45 a.m., Lawson said.

The two suspects, whose names police withheld, were taken to California Hospital Medical Center after complaining of pain, he said. It was unclear if a gun was recovered.

The driver is likely to be booked on suspicion of felony evading.
