2 Suspected Burglars Arrested After Wild Car Chase
LOS ANGELES
Two suspected burglars were arrested today after a sheriff's helicopter and CHP vehicles chased the suspects' car at speeds exceeding 100 mph over freeways and surface streets.
The chase ended about 8:20 a.m. near Slauson Avenue west of the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles, where one suspect was arrested after he got out of the car as it slowed down and tried to run off, according to a sheriff's lieutenant. The other suspect managed to hide in a nearby house after the car came to a halt, but he was arrested after a SWAT team surrounded the residence.
Authorities said an initial report by victims of the burglary that there may have been three suspects was "unclear," and no search was being made for any person other than the two suspects in custody.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a La Mirada residential burglary where the residents said they had scared off the suspects, said Lt. Mark Wilkins of the Norwalk Sheriff's Station.
Wilkins said a sheriff's helicopter followed the suspects who were in a red Chevrolet sedan.
The California Highway Patrol then began pursuing the suspect car, but when it exceeded 100 mph, the CHP pulled back.
The sheriff's helicopter, however, kept following the vehicle.
The car drove west on the Pomona (60) Freeway east of the Industry area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Then it turned south on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, west on the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway and north on the Harbor (110) Freeway to the South Los Angeles area.
The driver, Donte Jakes, 22, of Los Angeles, was taken into custody by the CHP.
Davon Higgins, 29, of Inglewood, ran into a home where a sheriff's special weapons team cornered him and finally caught him, Wilkins said.
The two are expected to face burglary charges, he said.
