Deadly Pursuit Ends In Upland With Crash, Shooting
UPLAND, Calif. (CBS) ―
A wild, early morning chase ended in Upland with a crash, a hail of gunfire and a dead suspect.
The chase began at 4 a.m. at Garden Drive and Pacific Street in San Bernardino when the suspect failed to yield to a traffic stop. After a short pursuit, deputies lost sight of the vehicle, which was later reported driving erratically in Fontana.
Throughout the chase, which lasted more than an hour and traversed 36 miles, the suspect struck at least six police squad cars and an innocent bystander's car.
Deputies tried to stop the vehicle with a spike strip and the PIT maneuver before the suspect turned around and rammed a patrol car head-on at Mountain and the 210 Freeway in Upland.
Gunfire erupted as the suspect continued driving and crashed into a sound barrier wall.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was declared dead at the scene.
No officers were injured, and its not known yet if the suspect died from the shooting or his injuries sustained in the crash.
