Man Arrested Following Riverside, Corona Chase
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (CBS) ―
A parolee was in custody after leading officers on a 30-minute chase that involved several collisions, authorities said.
Raul Morales, 32, of Riverside, was arrested about 7 p.m. Monday after allegedly trying to evade police in a stolen car that was eventually forced off the road, according to Riverside police Sgt. Mike Cook.
The chase began about 6:30 p.m. when officers in the Hillside area spotted a reported stolen vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, he said, adding that the suspect refused to comply and led Riverside officers west toward Corona.
California Highway Patrol and Corona police units joined the chase, Cook said.
The suspect vehicle ran into at least two vehicles when he reached Corona city limits, where a spike strip was deployed, Cook said, causing the tires to be punctured and the suspect to lose control of the vehicle near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Windsong Street.
"The suspect... abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled on foot," Cook said. "He was quickly located and taken into custody."
None of the motorists whose vehicles were hit during the pursuit were injured, he said.
"The suspect was treated for minor injuries obtained during the brief foot pursuit and when he was taken into custody," Cook said.
Morales was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of grand theft auto, assault with a deadly weapon and felony evading and resisting, according to jail records.
He is being held without bail due to his status as a parolee, records showed.
