A suspected drunken driver who was shot when he rammed into a patrol car while trying to flee from sheriff's deputies was hospitalized in critical condition Monday, authorities said.
Three deputies were slightly injured in the incident, the second of two deputy-involved shootings on Santa Fe Avenue Sunday, Deputy Ed Hernandez said.
"The deputies attempted to stop a suspected drunk driver who was driving recklessly," Hernandez said.
Sheriff's Lt. Adam Ellison said the suspect slammed his vehicle into the patrol car that had pulled in behind him to block his car in following a short pursuit.
"When he rammed the patrol car he pushed it backwards and one of the back tires ran over a deputy's foot," Ellison said.
"The force of the impact when the suspect's car hit the patrol car knocked one of the deputies to the ground and he was struck by the open passenger side door," said Ellison. "The other deputy was hit by the open door on the driver's side and he sustained an injury to his shoulder."
The earlier shooting occurred about 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of North Santa Fe Avenue in Compton, according to sheriff's Deputy Lillian Peck.
Deputies fatally shot an armed robbery suspect who ran from a fast food restaurant and pointed what turned out to be a replica of a handgun at them, Peck said. His identity was withheld pending family notification.
Detectives were investigating both shootings.
