Sylvia Lopez
Award-winning journalist Sylvia Lopez has been reporting the news on the air in Los Angeles for more than two decades. She currently anchors the KCAL9 News at 9pm, which focuses on international and domestic issues, as well as political news.
Sylvia has traveled to Europe, Mexico, and across the U-S to cover major stories of international importance. In 2005, she provided live reports from Cologne, Germany on Pope Benedict's first international trip. She reported live from the Washington DC headquarters of President Bush on election night, 2004. She's traveled extensively through Mexico: from the southern border for reports on Guatemalan refugees; to northern border towns for a series on drug cartels.
In Los Angeles, she's been at the anchor desk and in the field for the most compelling stories in recent history - riots, fires, floods, earthquakes, and shoot-outs.
For her work, Sylvia has been honored with numerous journalism and civic awards, including seven Emmy's, and a Golden Mike Award for an investigative series she wrote and produced on dangerous conditions facing helicopter pilots. She also received a regional Associated Press Award for a special on homeless children living on the streets of Skid Row. Sylvia received the prestigious Imagen award from the National Coalition of Christians and Jews for a series of reports she wrote, researched, and produced on critical issues facing Mexican Americans.
Sylvia is a native Angelena and graduate of the USC School of Journalism. She began her career as an intern and "gopher" at KNXT-TV, which is now CBS-2. Her first on-air job was in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
When she's not reporting the news, Sylvia spends much of her time speaking at community events. She sits on the board of Families in Schools, a non-profit organization which works to ensure that parents are involved with their children's' education.
Sylvia enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, cooking, traveling, and dancing.
