Steve Mauldin was named President and General Manager of CBS 2 and KCAL 9 in Los Angeles the largest duopoly in the country in December 2009.
His distinguished career in broadcasting and track record of success spans more than 30 years, including several years as a television sales executive in the Los Angeles market.
He joined CBS 2 and KCAL 9 after having served as President and General Manager of CBS Television Stations' Dallas/Fort Worth duopoly KTVT-TV and KTXA-TV (which, like KCAL, is an independent station with a strong local news and sports programming portfolio) since February 2003. Under his leadership, KTVT finished the November 2009 sweep in first place in late news for the first time ever. He also for a time oversaw CBS's entire group of stations in the Southwestern United States when the company also owned stations in Austin and Oklahoma City.
Mauldin joined the CBS Television Stations group in September 1998 as Vice President and General Manager of WFOR-TV in Miami. While there, he oversaw the rise of CBS 4's 11 p.m. newscast from fifth to first place in just two years. In May, 2001, he became the General Manager of one of the few triopolies in the United States when he took on the additional responsibility of managing WBFS-TV (Miami) and WTVX-TV (West Palm Beach).
Prior to Miami, Mauldin served as President and General Manager of WTSP-TV, the CBS affiliate in Tampa, since 1991. Before that, he was Vice President and General Manager of Gaylord Broadcasting Company's KHTV-TV in Houston from 1989 to 1991. Prior to that, Mauldin was Vice President and Station Manager of KTVT-TV in Dallas (which at the time was owned by Gaylord and was an independent station) from 1987 to 1989. From 1985 to 1987, he was Vice President and General Manager of WVUE-TV, New Orleans, also a Gaylord property.
Mauldin's television career began as an account executive at KOSA-TV in Odessa, Texas. He went on to work in sales and sales management in Las Vegas and was later hired by KABC-TV and ABC Spot Sales in Los Angeles.
His professional awards and honors include the American Women in Radio and Television's National Commendation Award (1994) for his efforts on behalf of the advancement of women in broadcasting. In addition, under his leadership, WTSP was awarded the National Station of the Year Award. He is also the recipient of two Emmy Awards, three Associated Press Awards, and the prestigious New York Film Festival Gold award, all for editorial commentary.
A native of Odessa, Texas, Mauldin attended Baylor University on a baseball scholarship. He is the proud father of four children: Michael, Christopher, Jeffrey, and Stephanie. Mauldin is a cancer survivor and is actively involved in fundraising for the American Cancer Society. He is also dedicated to building awareness of autism, as his daughter, Stephanie, has autism. His commitment to this cause inspired him to create a series of annual events -- named for Stephanie to assist special needs children in both the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and Dallas/Fort Worth areas. These "Stephanie's Day" events, which will make their debut in Los Angeles in 2010, are designed to bring special needs children and their families together with numerous non-profit organizations which can provide the specialized services those families need.
