John Ireland

John Ireland is the veteran of the KCAL 9 Sports team. Since joining the staff in the summer of 1995, John has been involved with just about every facet of what KCAL 9 Sports has to offer.

For the past six years, Ireland has seen time as a regular sports anchor and reporter. In addition to his work in the studio, John can be found as the "roving reporter" for KCAL 9 baseball and basketball broadcasts.

A local talent, John graduated from UCLA in 1985 with a degree in history. Upon graduating, he got his first job as a news reporter at a small station in Monroe, Louisiana. After a couple of months, he became the sports reporter and hasn't looked back since.

From Monroe, Ireland moved on to Beaumont, Texas before settling in San Diego in 1990. At KUSI-TV, John spent time on the morning show and as a go-to sports reporter for any circumstance. He covered everything from Padres baseball to Chargers football. He even rode alongside the runners in the San Diego Marathon.

John's work in San Diego won him two Emmy awards for best sportscast.

After completing a five-year run as the morning radio show host at XTRA Sports 1150, he filled in as the Clippers' play-by-play anouncer for 20 games during the 1999-2000 season.

Ireland is married and enjoys listening to Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Buffett and playing pick-up basketball and golf.
