Award-winning journalist Dave Lopez is the Orange County Correspondent and a General Assignment Reporter for CBS 2 News.
Lopez joined CBS 2 in 1977 as a General Assignment Reporter, and within a year became the station's Orange County Correspondent. In addition to his regular duties, he serves as substitute sports anchor for CBS 2 News.
With a total of 30 years in the TV news industry, 25 of those years at CBS 2, he has covered every major breaking event in Los Angeles. The Orange County Register named Lopez, "The 'Star' TV reporter in Orange County."
Lopez covers both news and features within the region, frequently breaking exclusive stories. Lopez reported extensively on the Nicole Brown/Ronald Goldman murders and subsequent O.J. Simpson trial for CBS 2 and most recently the San Diego kidnap-murder case of David Westerfield.
Throughout his career, Dave Lopez has received numerous journalism awards for his work. He has won eight Emmy Awards and has received a total of 15 nominations by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Lopez has received seven Golden Mike Awards, three Associated Press Awards, and a recognition by the Radio and Television News Directors Association.
Lopez was involved with CBS 2 News' Emmy Award-winning coverage of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. He was also part of the CBS 2 News team presented with an Associated Press award for live coverage of the Redondo Pier fire in 1988. Lopez was also involved with the CBS 2 coverage of the October 1987 earthquake, which won an Emmy, a Golden Mike, a Los Angeles Press Club and an Associated Press Award.
Prior to joining CBS 2 in 1977, Lopez was a general assignment reporter, weekend anchor and sports reporter at KFMB-TV, San Diego. Previously, he had been a general assignment and sports reporter at KHJ-TV, Los Angeles, also producing that station's sports specials.
Lopez was a sports writer at the Huntington Park Daily Signal newspaper before making the move into television.
Lopez attended East Los Angeles College and graduated from California State University in Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism. He has two grown children and lives in Long Beach.
